Zones: 5-9. Colorful tiny 1¼ inch leaves layered thickly one on top of another, sharply divided in five (palmate) sections with saw-toothed edges and narrow points. The eye candy colors start in spring as yellow-orange, intensifying into neon orange, softening in summer to light yellow-green, then turning in fall to hot tangerine. [Note that fall color is influenced by local conditions.] Katsura’s growth pattern is congested and twiggy, making it a favorite for Bonsai. Although in the landscape this will eventually reach 18-20 feet, it is easily kept lower with moderate pruning, making it an excellent choice for patio container or large rock garden.
