Zones: 5-9. Formerly Acer japonicum. ‘Kawaii’ translates as ‘Cute’. It is a short weeping japonica maple with small leaves 2-2.5 inches long, emerging in spring colors of plum-red with orange shading. Summer brings more green to present an orange edged green leaf, followed by brilliant fall colors of red and orange - thus giving a long season of visual delight. Hardier (20 degrees F) than most palmatum maples, Kawaii grows slowly to about 3-4 feet at ten years. Easily kept shorter with trimming. Prefers filtered shade or AM sun with moderate water and good drainage. Shipping size approximately 10-15 inches, with crown just starting to fill in.
